Western Park on bustling Ponsonby Road in Auckland was the venue for a picnic which Positive Women hosted on World AIDS Day (1 December 2012) to raise awareness of women and families in New Zealand living with HIV.
The crowd was thoroughly entertained throughout the day by a great line-up of performing artists. First to perform was the Caribbeanz Southern Stars Steel Band, setting the scene for a relaxed day with soothing Caribbean rhythms. The Caribbeanz Southern Stars is New Zealand’s first Caribbean Steel Band and the only Caribbean band in Auckland. After the Caribbeanz Southern Stars, the Damaru Drummers took to the stage with their selection of African drums and percussion instruments. The music continued well into the afternoon with the acoustic band the Remarkables treating the crowd to their special blend of bluegrass, country and swing. Also making an appearance between acts was a dance group of contemporary dancers improvising with various dance pieces. M.A.C make-up artists made many kiddie hearts happy with their face-painting master pieces. Also dropping in for a while was a friendly kiwi giving out free hugs.
We want to say a very special thank you to all the volunteers who contributed to making the day such a success. Without your help we would not have been able to have everything ready in time for the picnic. Thank you Veronica, Anthony Iwers of ViiV, Graham, Vera, Rosemine, Sev, Christian and Kane.
