Cartier Bereavement Fund

Positive Women Inc. has been very fortunate to be part-recipients of funding from the closure of the Cartier Bereavement Trust.

The Cartier Bereavement Trust was set up by Karen Ritchie in honour of her friend Courtney Cartier, who died as a result of AIDS. There was no money to pay for Courtneys’ funeral so Karen approached a number of people from the community who came together and did some fundraising events to help pay for Courtney’s Funeral. And so began the Cartier Bereavement Trust.

The Trust has assisted with many funerals over the years but with the advances in HIV medicines, people are not dying like they used to. Karen and her Board decided it was timely to wind up the Trust and donated the money from the Trust to Positive Women Inc. and Body Positive.

Positive Women Inc. will continue to use the money to assist with costs for women living with HIV, who need assistance with their funeral costs. In that light we have called it the Cartier Bereavement Fund.

This is an amazing gift and we want to say a HUGE thank you to Karen
and her team at the Cartier Bereavement Trust.
