Happy Retirement Judith Ackroyd

Being one of it’s co-founders, Judith Ackroyd has a history spanning 30 years with Positive Women Inc. After many years as a social worker, tutor, lecturer and supervisor, Judith is hanging up her professional hat for a more relaxed retirement hat.

During the 1980’s, Judith and Suzy Morrison were social workers for the Auckland Hospital Community AIDS Resource Team (CART). In the late 80’s they noticed an increase in the number of women being diagnosed with HIV in New Zealand. At the time, HIV support services were geared to accommodate the gay community and there were no services specifically for women.

In 1990. Judith, Suzy and a number of women living with HIV, put together a constitution, raised some funds and Positive Women Inc. was born as a registered charity.

In those early days, Judith and Suzy assisted with the management of the organisation. Over a number of years and supportive mentorship, they stepped back and enabled the community of women living with HIV to come forward and take over the leadership of the organisation.

Since then, Judith has volunteered for Positive Women Inc. at the annual Women’s Retreat, which was initially instigated by Judith and Suzy, and many other significant events held over the past 30 years.

Judith has also stood alongside the organisations National Coordinator and Social Worker as their professional supervisor for the past 10 years.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank and salute you Judith. Without you, Positive Women Inc. would not exist.

Enjoy your retirement which is well deserved.
