NZ HIV Stigma Index Study on TV3

Gareth Thomas, ex Welsh rugby player, contemplated suicide when he found out he had HIV.

We were very excited that TV3 picked up the story on the New Zealand People living with HIV Stigma Index project, linking it with the recent announcement by the ex Welsh ruby player, Gareth Thomas, who publicly revealed he is living with HIV. His story highlights the power of HIV related stigma for people living with HIV.

The story includes interviews with two New Zealand people, Rodrigo Olin and Heather Sangster Smith, who are bravely putting their faces to HIV in a national context to alleviate incorrect perceptions about HIV and the people who live with it.

The Stigma Index project aims to interview 200 people to find out the true measure of HIV related stigma and discrimination, as experienced by people living with HIV. This information will give us a national baseline to work from in regards to policy and programming to reduce HIV related stigma and discrimination.

If you are living with HIV, or know anyone who is, who would like to join this study, please contact us at info@stigmaindex.nz
