The AIDS Epidemiology Group at Otago University released its annual newsletter in June. The newsletter highlights statistics on HIV and AIDS in New Zealand for 2019.
The AIDS Epidemiology Group has been recording statistics on HIV and AIDS since 1985.
For the first time in two years, there was a slight rise in HIV diagnoses. There were 212 people diagnosed in 2019 compared to 178 in 2018.
Of the 212 people diagnosed:
186 were men
23 women, and
The main reason for the increase is due to the number of people who have contracted HIV overseas. Transmission within New Zealand remains about the same as 2018.
