National Coordinators December Update

By Jane Bruning

Kia ora. It was with great pleasure I attended the NZAF life membership awards ceremony on 16 November 2019. Four amazing people were acknowledged for the extraordinary contributions they have made towards the HIV response over many, many years. They were Mark Thomas, Infectious Diseases Clinician at Auckland Hospital, Charlie Peters, Kaumatua of Body Positive and a person living with HIV, Dr Alison Copeland, a GP who has many patients living with HIV and has been involved with HIV since the mid 80’s, and finally, Vern Keller, who worked as the NZAF Librarian for 24 years. Vern passed away in 2015 and this honour was a posthumous acknowledgment of all the work he did during his 24 years.

I have known all of these people for many years which made this awards ceremony extra special, especially as the Positive Women Inc office is now in the old NZAF Library and I sit daily in what used to be Vern’s office.

This is the last Coordinators update of the year. I want to say a huge thanks to the team at Positive Women Inc, Marietta, Megan and Abby, who have worked tirelessly over the past year. So lucky to have such an amazing team. Thank you to the Board for all the work they do behind the scenes and I would like to say a special thank you to all the people living with HIV who got involved in activities and events this year. It’s so wonderful to see more and more people living with HIV standing tall and proud.

Wishing you all Happy Holidays and looking forward to connecting again in the new year.
